Moeen a doubt for second Ashes test, says Root

Moeen a doubt for second Ashes test, says Root England all-rounder Moeen Ali is a doubt for the second Ashes test against Australia as he struggles to recover from a cut on his index finger, captain Joe Root said on Friday. Moeen, whose bowling was affected by the cut during England's 10-wicket defeat at the Gabba, would probably be retained as a batsman at Adelaide Oval in the match starting Saturday even if were unable to bowl, said Root. The skipper, however, would not rule out a potential test debut for legspinner Mason Crane, depending on the conditions and if Moeen was deemed unfit to play.

A record crowd has poured into Adelaide Oval on Day 1 of the inaugural day-night Ashes Test. It narrowly beat the 54,468 that attended the 2015 Showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide as well as the 53,817 that turned up for the Crows’ meeting with Geelong in the AFL Finals series earlier

More people have attended the second Ashes battle between Australia and England than any other Test match at Adelaide Oval.

The Adelaide crowds for the current Test have, within four days, surpassed the oval's previous Test-best aggregate of 172,361 in the infamous Bodyline Test of 1933.

More than 22,000 spectators are in the oval on Tuesday, taking the aggregate to more than 172,600 - and more fans are expected to attend the looming night session.

The opening day of the current Test attracted 55,317 spectators, a record for Test cricket at the venue.

Legspinner Crane could debut for England

Legspinner Crane could debut for England England could turn to uncapped legspinner Mason Crane in their search to level the Ashes series, with Moeen Ali's cut spinning finger complicating the equation.Crane, who impressed so much in Sydney grade cricket last summer that he played for NSW, is being mentored by Stuart MacGill and is highly rated by coach Trevor Bayliss.

The record crowd at a sporting event at Adelaide Oval is 62,543 for the SANFL Australian Rules grand final in 1965.

The oval was developed and re-opened in 2014 with a capacity of 60,000 in the stadium precinct - that includes about 52,000 in seats and standing on the oval's hill, and a further 8,000 in hospitality areas with no direct view of the cricket.

Ashes fans warned over racial abuse .
Cricket Australia has reminded fans they risk bans and police action if they racially vilify players, with the governing body hoping witnesses will come forward after revelations about a comment directed at Moeen Ali. Moeen didn't report the incident that occurred while fielding at Adelaide Oval to England's team management or the match referee during the second Test. It came to light when he spoke to reporters in Perth."Somebody (in the crowd) asked me what time my kebab shop opened," Moeen said.
