But in a keenly contested semi he could only manage fifth, having required a top three spot to move into the deciding race.

He was in the contest going into the final lap and looked to steal some space on an inside line but didn't quite have the speed to pull it off, also missing a place in the B final.

"There were too many things happening at the start, so I was just waiting - they're tired, I have more energy," Jung said.
