North Korean speed skater Jong Kwan-bom has done his best to ensure his country will live up to its reputation as being friendless after trying to deliberately trip an opponent at the Winter Olympics.

Starting from the inside lane, the 16-year-old slipped as he pushed off in his heat of the men’s 500-metre short track and came crashing down on the ice.

Replays showed Jong stick his right hand out as he landed flat on his face to try and trip Japanese rival Keita Watanabe.

“That made you wince a little bit, to see what could happen in that circumstance,” Channel Seven commentator Peter Donegan said with Jong’s hand coming dangerously close to being sliced open by Watanabe’s skate.

One of only 10 competitors to take part in the Winter Olympics, Jong brushed an interview attempt as he walked off the track.
