Sports Sunday panellist and netball legend Liz Ellis has slammed the behaviour of South African cricket fans against Candice Warner.

In the wake of the sledging controversy during the four-Test series between Australia and South Africa, Ellis pointed out the troubling attitudes and double-standards towards the wife of David Warner.

South African fans have been distributing masks of Sonny Bill Williams during the second Test at Port Elizabeth, a poor taste attempt to get under the skin of the Aussie opener at the expense of his wife over an infamous toilet tryst in 2007 with the rugby star.

"I reckon the thing that has been overlooked in this whole controversy - while everyone's focusing on the sledging - 40 years after the sexual revolution, in the middle of the #MeToo movement, the week of International Women's Day, a player's wife has been been dragged through the mud because they're attempting to shame her for her past," Ellis said.

"It really does slam home this idea this idea that some neanderthals have that women are the property of their men.

"It upsets me to the core. Sport is a real driver in society, and generally it's a driver for good.

"And here we have an international sporting contest that is essentially saying to women, the message is you come here as a Madonna, you come here as pure or you don't come here at all.

"I don't see fans turning up to All Blacks games with Candice Falzon masks. So how dare they turn up at a South African cricket game in masks of someone the wife of one of the cricketer's was formally involved in.

"It is disgraceful. It is upsetting."

Fellow Sports Sunday regular Peter FitzSimons echoed Ellis' argument and went a step further calling for the Australian cricket captain Steve Smith to put an end to sledging all together, describing the practice as a 'toxic boomerang'.

"It shames our national name and we've got to stop," he said.

Sporting Gods troll the Warners with Sonny Bill Williams double-booking .
South Africa players, officials and fans have gone to extraordinary lengths to get under Australia opener David Warner’s skin during a spiteful Test series - but their efforts pale in comparison with the prank the sporting Gods pulled this week. Proteas player Quinton de Kock sparked an ugly altercation with Warner during the first Test in Durban after allegedly referencing Candice Warner’s infamous 2007 encounter with dual international Sonny Bill Williams at the Clovelly Hotel in a tasteless on-field sledge.
