AFL greats line up to slam Naitanui suspension

AFL greats line up to slam Naitanui suspension AFL greats Nick Riewoldt, Brendon Goddard, Brian Taylor and Bob Murphy have all slammed the one-match suspension handed out to West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui. Naitanui was rubbed out by match review officer Michael Christian for dangerously tackling Port Adelaide’s Karl Amon on the weekend. The All-Australian big man took his case to the tribunal on Wednesday night where his ban was upheld.Riewoldt felt there were only three conclusions to draw in the wake of Naitanui’s suspension – either the AFL rules are wrong, Christian is wrong or the MRO had an "absolute shocker".

Nicholas Naitanui (/ˌnætəˈnuːi/; born 4 May 1990) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Born in Sydney to Fijian parents, his family moved to Perth, Western Australia after his father' s death.

The Eagles giant collected the much smaller Amon in a fierce hit from behind late in Saturday’s clash, with the Power player slamming face first into the Optus Stadium turf.

He was charged bt the match review panel and after a two-hour hearing on Wednesday night the AFL Tribunal – consisting of Richard Loveridge, David Neitz and Shane Wakelin – upheld the one-match ban.

Naitanui accepted the decision but admitted he was ‘a little bit dumbfounded’ after the hearing.

“I don't think I feel like I need to change anything,” Naitanui said.

“There was no malice in it, there was no aggression.

“But because it was just an act that I've done for the last 10 years of my career, I was left a little bit dumbfounded to a degree.”

Now, St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt has completely destroyed the match review panel's decision to suspend the ruckman.

"This was a good football tackle. It was a free kick for in the back at worse,” Riewoldt said on AFL 360 on Wednesday.

“To expect Nic to make that split second decision as he was approaching Karl Amon (is unrealistic). What if it was Charlie Dixon? The ramifications would have been entirely different.

“I just think to expect the player to make that judgement in a split second is completely unrealistic.

“He didn’t sling. It wasn’t a spear tackle. Both arms weren’t pinned — one arm was free. Are we serious?

“I feel for the players. What are they meant to think when there is a split second to make a decision?

"Either Michael Christian is having an absolute nightmare and he’s having an absolute shocker or the rules are wrong.

“I think based on what we’ve seen this year from the MRO and the results that have gone certain ways I’m just confused.”
