Geelong coach Chris Scott says AFL umpires should no longer make game-day reports, believing the matter should be left to match review officer Michael Christian. The AFL has changed the tribunal process in 2018, with Christian reviewing all matches.

It follows the one match ban handed down to Cats spearhead Tom Hawkins, who effectively agreed to a plea bargain-style deal after he was threatened with a two-match suspension for the same charge.

"We're still happy we made the right decision to accept Tom's punishment for the good of the game," Scott told 9 NEWS.

"It just appears that what's good for the game has changed within a week."

Ziebell free to play after beating kneeing charge

Ziebell free to play after beating kneeing charge The AFL tribunal found Jack Ziebell's knee to the head of Richmond's Reece Conca was of insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence. Ziebell had been handed a one-match ban on Monday by match review officer Michael Christian following the incident in the Tigers’ win over North on Sunday.Christian had graded the incident as intentional with low impact and high contact. North disputed the classification, arguing that the contact was accidental rather than intentional, and of insufficient force.

Hawkins, who was lauded for his conduct in accepting the ban, was also left bemused today.

"It's just a hard one. Whether there's confusion or not, I'm not exactly sure, but there probably is a bit in my mind," he said.

It's only the second time in the competition's history the AFL has launched an appeal against the tribunal.

The first, against Richmond's Bachar Houli last year was successful. He was rubbed out for four weeks, instead of the original two weeks given to him for striking Carton’s Jed Lamb.

Tomorrow's appeal will be heard in Melbourne at 3pm.
