Cronulla’s Valentine Holmes has scored Queensland’s first try of Game 1 in the 2018 State of Origin series.

It was the NSW Blues who got off to a good start at the MCG on Wednesday night – although it took some time for the first points to be put on the board.

However, in a short burst James Maloney kicked a penalty goal, followed by a try from James Tedesco and conversion from Maloney to put the Blues up 8-0.

Holmes went some way to evening the ledger however he managed to break the lines and burst away to record the Maroons’ first points of the night.

Holmes then converted his own try to bring the score to 8-6 in favour of NSW.

Out-of-contract Queensland star Valentine Holmes is set to leave the Cronulla Sharks with a surprise team revealed as his destination in 2019.Speaking on the NRL Footy Show, NRL reporter Ben Dobbin said that Holmes, who is a Townsville native will look to return home due to a monster offer.
