The Tim Paine era kicks off for Australia when his side take on England at The Oval in the first of five ODIs.

The 22-year-old pace man has been tipped for greatness and can compensate for the absence of the injured Dale Steyn this summer.

Australia kick off a fresh era under new captain Tim Paine at The Oval on Wednesday, confident their team of rookies can shock England in the five-match ODI series.

The hosts boast a woeful one-day record against Australia, winning just 52 of the 142 matches between the two nations.

However, they are the No.1 ranked 50-over team in the world and been transformed under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan after their shambolic showing at the 2015 World Cup.

It’s a side that looks eminently capable of regaining their No 1 Test spot.

Despite their lofty status, England go into the game after a shock six-run defeat to Scotland in Edinburgh and will be without talismanic allrounder Ben Stokes and key bowler Chris Woakes.

But as they showed by getting so close to Scotland's mammoth total of 376, they boast great batting depth and regularly post scores in excess of 300.

In the last series between the sides in Australia earlier this year England claimed a 4-1 win.

With the tourists missing the suspended Steve Smith and David Warner in addition to Ashes-winning bowling spearheads Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins the hosts are heavily fancied to win the series.

Langer labels Aussie cricketers 'spoilt brats'

Langer labels Aussie cricketers 'spoilt brats' Newly appointed Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has spoken of the culture of the national side prior to his appointment, saying Darren Lehmann’s side carried on like “spoilt brats”. Langer spoke in length about Australia’s reputation on the international stage in an interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports. The Australian coach said historically Australia was well known for its tenacity and skill on the pitch but in the last few years, the narrative had changed.

Australia coach Justin Langer admits his team desperately need more runs from their middle order if they are to have any chance of success and for Glenn Maxwell to rediscover his batting mojo.

Maxwell has scored just one and three in his visits to the crease against Sussex and Middlesex last week and had a lean IPL campaign where he averaged just over 14 for the Delhi Daredevils.

With Travis Head scoring a century as an opener against Middlesex and Aaron Finch crunching a run-a-ball 50 batting at five at Lord's, Langer admits he is tempted to move the vice-captain down the order.

Finch has an outstanding record against England against the new ball where he averages more than 55 with five centuries in 20 matches.

"Aaron Finch's record opening the batting for the last five or six games for Australia, and against England, is just brilliant," Langer said.

"He's as fast as anyone between the wickets, which is a key focus for our one-day cricket.

Paine shocked after his 'hardest' ever day

Paine shocked after his 'hardest' ever day Australian skipper Tim Paine says his side's ODI capitulation against England rates as the hardest day of his career. AJ Tye went wicketless for 100 runs from nine overs with Jhye Richardson the pick of the bowlers with unflattering figures of 3-92."I've been playing cricket since I was a kid and that is the hardest day's cricket of my life," Paine said."Everything we tried didn't work and everything they tried came off."Normally that happens for an hour or two and you get a wicket. To go on for as long as we did ... you have to take your hat off to them, they hit the ball as well I have seen.

ENGLAND 'S Ashes defeat saw a row erupt over the state of the "dangerous" pitch before play began. The square was not properly covered overnight as heavy rain battered Perth - allowing water to seep under the plastic. Australia Ashes captain happy to reclaim Ashes with demolition over England .

"He's fearless. His strengths are when he hits the ball down the ground. He actually changes momentum of the game."

Despite two relatively low scores from D'Arcy Short in the warm-up matches, he looks set to make his ODI debut with Marcus Stoinis to keep his spot at No.3 after his classy century against Sussex.

It could mean Shaun Marsh misses out despite a solid 49 against Middlesex with Langer leaning towards playing four quick bowlers with Ashton Agar the spinning option.

"We've used the opportunity to go with the extra bowler rather than the extra batsman which we do traditionally," Langer said.

"I've always seen having that extra bowling option work well in domestic cricket, particularly if your seven and eight can bat a bit and we've seen that with Ashton Agar and Michael Neser.

Giant Queensland quick Billy Stanlake was preferred to Andrew Tye against Middlesex and his pace and bounce unsettled the batsmen throughout and he looks in line to make his third appearance for Australia.

Possible team: D'Arcy Short, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch, Tim Paine (capt, wkt), Ashton Agar, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Billy Stanlake, Kane Richardson.

Langer speechless after ridiculous run

Langer speechless after ridiculous run Australia's horror showing in the third One Day International against England could be summed up by one play that prompted these reactions. Meanwhile, Justin Langer, in his first full series as Australian coach, could not bare to watch the nightmare that had developed. The Sky Sports commentary team of Nasser Hussain and Kumar Sangakkara were just as dumbfounded by the shocking attempt at a second run as Langer was."Surely that's a ridiculous run," Hussain said."Stoinis is looking at Maxwell as if Maxwell called it, but he's short there. He's way short.
