Peter Wallace, one of the toughest NRL players in the modern era, says it will be sad not to be on the field but no less satisfying should the Panthers go on to win the NRL title without him.

The Penrith captain was forced to retire on Tuesday due to injury, announcing the end of a career that included 240 NRL games for the Panthers and Brisbane and four State of Origin appearances for NSW.

"I've always been able to play and train with injuries and a bit busted, but it's getting harder," said the 32-year-old, who had been sidelined in recent weeks with a shoulder injury.

"Peter has repeatedly played for the club with injuries that would keep the normal man home in bed," Gould said.

A fitting end for the selfless warrior, who shifted from the halves to hooker out of necessity, would have been to hoist the Provan-Summons Trophy high in the middle of ANZ Stadium on the first Sunday of October. Penrith, the joint competition favourites, could well be there, but for Wallace such a fairytale farewell was not to be.

"I made the decision last week and it got to the point I wasn't able to give my all. I needed to train well to play well and I couldn't," Wallace told Fairfax Media.

"The team is going well, so I thought it was time. It's hard but the right thing to do.

The fact Wallace played so long without an ACL beggars belief.

Respected sports doctor Nathan Gibbs, who works with the NSW Origin team, said it was extremely rare to continue playing any form of sport without an ACL.

"And it's for the two simple reasons the knee is unstable and it bloody hurts," Gibbs said.

"Plenty of players can play injured, but not many can play well when injured. So that's a rap on the mental toughness of Peter."

Wallace said scans cleared him to return at the start of 2016 and the discovery shocked everyone nearly 18 months later after his knee ballooned at the end of the Eels clash.

As for the chance of being there on grand final day and watching Penrith possibly lift the trophy without him, Wallace said: "I'd love to be a part of the playing group, but I'll still be involved with the boys. I've been a big part of this young group the last few years and had a role in their development so that will be just as satisfying.
