New South Wales Origin Coach Brad Fittler has backed Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga to make an impact if selected in Queensland’s side for Game 2.

Ponga was drafted into the Maroons squad following Billy Slater’s hamstring injury prior to Game 1, but did not partake in Game 1. Following Queensland’s loss in the Origin opener, several experts have called for the 20-year-old to be named to start Game 2.

“He’s just outstanding. It’s a breath of fresh air the way he’s playing. He’s got his trademark runs and there’s not much he can’t do at the moment,” Fittler said.

Despite Ponga’s outstanding form, the return of Slater for Game 2 may mean that he is unable to play the fullback position, but Fittler backed the star to succeed regardless of the position.

“He’s played wing before. I don’t know if you can bring just a winger and a fullback in but I’m sure he could play anywhere,” Fittler said.

“He’s just a footballer.

“It’d be a big ask coming in and if you had to whack him into the centres or five-eighth in his first game but he just seems like anything’s achievable for the moment.”

Ponga has revitalised the Knights in 2018 lifting his side to six wins through 14 games, one more than their win total for the entire 2017 season.

New South Wales and Queensland will face off in Game 2 of the State of Origin series on the 24th of June at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
