St George Illawarra teammates have sprung to the defence of axed State of Origin playmaker Ben Hunt, claiming it was the wrong decision for Queensland to dump him to the bench for the final match of the series.

Hunt has made way for Daly Cherry-Evans in the Maroons starting lineup for game three of the series at Suncorp Stadium.

Dragons hooker Cameron McInnes has slammed the move, saying Hunt deserved more credit for his performance in the opening game.

“To blame him for what happened in game two is absolutely ridiculous, that has never been our stance.”
