Dual world champion Magnussen was a big name no show at the recent Pan Pacs trials in Adelaide, sparking speculation the 27-year-old may be contemplating walking away.

After April's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Magnussen said he would assess his future with coach Mitch Falvey and admitted hanging up the Speedos was an option following years of battling shoulder issues.

Verhaeren said he supported Magnussen's decision to skip the trials in order to pursue "new interests" but was uncertain if he would ever see him back in the national team.

"I'm not sure. I would say at the moment it is 50-50," he said.

"The only one who can make a decision is James himself and we want to give as good as guidance when he needs it but we will leave it up to him - I don't have an idea."

Australia will line up against the might of the United States at next month's Pan Pacs without Magnussen and fellow sprint king Cameron McEvoy, who skipped the trials to find a new coach.

London Olympic silver medallist Magnussen released a statement saying he was not retiring just yet after ditching the trials but did not give a time frame for a pool return.

Verhaeren said Magnussen was simply on an "extended break".

"He is figuring out what he wants to do in life, and as a result what he wants to do in swimming," he said.

"We want to support him as much as we can, whether he decides to continue his career in the pool or transition his way out.

"For him it's 'do I want to do this or do I want another path in my life'.

"At the moment there is no decision from Maggie."

Verhaeren finalised a 33-strong national squad for the Pan Pacs squad after the four-day Adelaide trials.

The Dolphins team will leave on July 15 for a near month-long build-up that includes camps in Cairns and Nagaoka, Japan before the Pan Pacs begin in Tokyo on August 9.
