Billy Slater has been dragged into the alleged feud between Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk with claims that Melbourne Storm’s famed big three all fell out over a WAG blow-up.

The alleged bad blood first became public when Sydney Roosters halfback Cronk embraced most of his former Storm teammates after their recent clash but barely managed a handshake with Smith.

9News reporter Danny Weidler wrote in his weekly column for The Sun Herald the origins of the feud started between Smith’s wife Barbara and Slater’s wife Nicole before a family-friendly holiday for Kangaroos players during the World Cup last year. He also said he witnessed an argument between Smith and his wife.

Slater attempted to put the tensions to one side while Smith was going through a rough trot away from the game, which Weidler claims was amplified after several wrong stories circulated about him during the World Cup, but was shut out by his teammate.

The pair’s personal relationship suffered and they now only enjoy a professional one for the Storm.

Smith allegedly took offence at Cronk’s decision to leave the Storm at the end of last season to be closer to his Sydney-based fiancée Tara Rushton before electing to play on and sign with the Sydney Roosters.

The Storm skipper even went as far as making a play for Mitchell Pearce, who was a chance to play alongside Cronk at the Roosters before signing with Newcastle.

Smith and Cronk’s situation was exacerbated after Smith failed to attend Cronk’s wedding, which has been attributed to a lack of communication between the pair.

The Storm skipper described Cronk as “just another person wearing a Roosters jersey” after their recent clash.

“It was a little bit strange to be honest when both teams ran out to start the game, seeing him in those colours,” Smith said.

“I’d obviously seen him a few times throughout the year playing on TV but actually to see him in the flesh was a little bit strange.

“It was the first time myself, Ryan (Hoffman), Billy (Slater), Will Chambers, the older guys that have been around and played many games with Cooper (Cronk), it’s the first time we’ve ever played against him.

“It was a little bit strange, I think I only had to tackle him once but once you’re in that moment, once you’re in that game it’s just another person wearing a Roosters jersey and I thought the boys did a really good job tonight.

“There wasn’t too much talk or any sort of banter, we just got on with our jobs, he’s a professional guy and we’re the same.”

The ongoing distraction doesn’t seem to be affecting Smith’s form on the field, with the veteran No.9 guiding his side to an impressive win against St George Illawarra on Thursday night.
