Penrith Panthers general manager Phil Gould has adamantly denied that he was involved in the meeting with Ivan Cleary that sparked Anthony Griffin's sacking, giving his side of the story in a compelling Six Tackles With Gus podcast.

Gould has copped the brunt of the blame for Griffin's shock demise in an intense fallout to Penrith's bombshell decision earlier this week.

However, speaking frankly about the conversations that led to the coach's axing, Gould claimed he had convinced the club's executive to allow Griffin to coach out the season even after the Panthers mentor had lost the support of many of the club's powerbrokers.

With no viable replacement to turn to, Gould revealed on the podcast that he had told Panthers chairman David O'Neill to "let me keep managing" the Griffin situation until the off-season when the hunt for a new coach could be ramped up.

But according to Gould, O'Neill went off script by introducing the idea to current Wests Tigers coach Cleary that he could be brought back to the club that sacked him in 2015.

That conversation took place at a meeting Gould said he had no part in, despite media reports to the contrary. He described those reports as "scurrilous".

Gould said it was not unusual for O'Neill and Cleary to catch up as they had been "close friends" since Cleary was coaching at Penrith, claiming that on this occasion the two had met to discuss the sale of Cleary's house.

However, when they wandered into a conversation about a potential reunion it made Griffin's job untenable.

"I believe the meeting on Tuesday was to discuss the sale of Ivan's house out at Penrith because Dave's always had his eye on it and he said 'if you're going to sell it, give me first look at it', you know," Gould said.

"That conversation as it usually does gets around to football and Dave innocently asked him 'would you ever come back to Panthers one day?'

"As I understand it that conversation escalated over the next couple of days to where on Friday I was informed by Dave that Ivan was keen to go and talk to the Wests Tigers about his long-term future, with a view towards one day returning to the Panthers ... one day returning to the Panthers."

Gould said the fear of the story leaking to the media forced him into action.

"I said to Dave 'if he goes to the Wests Tigers on Monday and makes that inquiry with his good mate Justin Pascoe, who's the CEO, I said this will be in the media Monday night'," Gould said.

"I said 'that's not fair to Anthony Griffin', I said 'that's going to create a media storm straight away', I said 'I can't have Anthony coaching under those conditions, we need to tell him exactly what was going on'.

"So we had a meeting with the executive and we decided or I was instructed to inform Anthony his services were no longer required for 2019 and beyond and that being the case it was probably best to part ways now because it's only going to be a media storm for the rest of the season."

Gould said he accepted responsibility for the Griffin decision as "the boss of Panthers" but said he had been on the end of some unfairly negative press because "it's convenient for certain sections of the media to point the finger at me and it's sexy to blame me".

"I have had absolutely no discussion with Ivan Cleary, I have never suggested at any time Ivan Cleary return to the Panthers, I have never organised or asked that anyone at Panthers meet with Ivan Cleary to discuss that. Never at any time," Gould clarified.

" ... Any suggestions that I have been part of this Ivan Cleary approach or that I have offered Ivan Cleary a contract or that I've asked Ivan Cleary to break a contract, or that I've organised for our chairman to meet with Ivan Cleary are scurrilous in the extreme.

"They are just not true. My only involvement in all of this was to tell our executive that if Ivan was going to have this discussion with Wests Tigers on Monday then we owed it to our coach to inform him exactly what was happening because it will create a media storm and it will make his position very difficult here."
