Phil Gould has sensationally claimed he was forced to talk Panthers caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo out of quitting the club twice because of his frustration at working with sacked coach Anthony Griffin.

Just a day after Griffin unloaded on Gould and the Panthers following his sacking four weeks out from the finals, Gould revealed former assistant Ciraldo twice wanted to walk out on Penrith over his relationship with Griffin.

Gus reveals timeline on coaching choice

Gus reveals timeline on coaching choice Penrith Panthers general manager Phil Gould has discussed when a decision on who will coach the Panthers in 2019 and beyond will be made. Gould's options to replace Griffin appear to have already dwindled to an extent with rumoured lead candidate Ivan Cleary pledging to see out his current contract with the Wests Tigers. Admit heavy speculation linking him with a return to Penrith, Cleary addressed the rumours in a lengthy statement to the media on Saturday."I am enjoying my contribution at this club. The club's growing nicely.

Again, Gould managed to talk Ciraldo around. In Griffin's defence, he also acknowledged Ciraldo 's grievances and they moved on. Gould made the sensational claim during Thursday night's Footy Show that Ciraldo had twice tried to bail ' I talked Ciraldo out of quitting twice ': Gould fires back .

"I have utmost respect and confidence in Cameron Ciraldo and he's been a wonderful ally for Anthony Griffin," Gould told Channel Nine's The Footy Show on Thursday night. "He has assisted that man loyally and without question.

"He did come to me and resign twice for the way he was treated by the head coach. Twice. And twice I talked him into staying. I'll just put that out there so that everyone knows there's two sides to the story."

Ciraldo will take charge of his first match as an NRL head coach when the fifth-placed Panthers take on the Titans on the Gold Coast on Saturday. It is the latest twist in a week of drama after the Panthers punted Griffin despite recording back-to-back miraculous comeback wins, hoping to lure Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary back to the foot of the mountains to reunite with son Nathan.

Gould again slams 'embarrassing' Griffin

Gould again slams 'embarrassing' Griffin Penrith supremo Phil Gould has fired back at Anthony Griffin to continue the pair's war of words since the Panthers coach's sudden axing on Monday.Phil Gould has doubled down on his justification for dumping Penrith coach Anthony Griffin in a stern reply to the sacked mentor's own criticism of the Penrith supremo.

It is a shame nobody talked Gould into quitting . Egotistical wanker. You have to wonder how much of this stuff is real, and how much is fake. Take the stories going around re Barrett going back to Penrith as an example, a bit of truth in FAKE NEWS.

Panthers supremo Phil Gould has fired back at former coach Anthony Griffin, saying he twice had to talk interim coach Cameron Ciraldo out of quitting his post.

Griffin used Fox Sports' NRL 360 program on Wednesday to blast Gould, but the Panthers' executive general manager of football claimed the Panthers "wouldn't have won a premiership the way he was coaching".

"He's hurt a lot of people with that interview and he's embarrassed himself in front of the people that know the truth," Gould said. "I'm not going to stand back and let our club and people be denigrated.

"There are plenty of people in our club who worked with Anthony, loved Anthony and wanted to do well for him. But I don't think that was respected in return. He's got us nowhere near a premiership at the moment."

Griffin had claimed the Panthers' development systems were a shambles before he arrived in 2015, when Gould had axed Cleary, an accusation which riled Panthers' powerbrokers on Thursday.

Gould set for five more years at Penrith

Gould set for five more years at Penrith The Panthers board signed their executive general manager of football to a new deal with little fanfare before the sacking of coach Anthony Griffin.Phil Gould is set to extend his stay at Penrith to beyond a decade after it emerged that the Panthers' football supremo had signed a new five-year deal with the club.

Gould revealed Ciraldo , who has been a Panthers assistant coach for the past five years, twice attempted to resign due to a poor relationship with Griffin. But I 'm glad Gus talked me out of it." Ciraldo also hit out at claims from Griffin this week that the Panthers had struggled to develop juniors

Gould said the then assistant coach Ciraldo twice wanted out “for the way he was treated by the coach” and twice this season – most recently following the 50-18 loss to Brisbane on July 20 – the board had wanted to sack Griffin. “ Twice I talked him ( Ciraldo ) into staying,” Gould said.

And he claimed Penrith's hiding at the hands of the Broncos after a mini-camp on the Gold Coast was a result of a poor Griffin-led preparation, essentially the final straw for the coach who was on the verge of taking the club to the finals for the third time in as many years.

"When things were going good Cameron Ciraldo was doing a lot of the information, a lot of the work, and Peter Wallace had joined him in that time and was doing a lot of the work," Gould said.

"They were completely cut out of the equation in the last five or six weeks and the players were confused and not being prepared well enough. They just didn't know why he had gone back on what was working well earlier in the season."
