McKernan has only notched 62 games over his nine-year career at both Essendon and Adelaide but looked to have finally cemented a regular senior spot this year before injuring his hamstring in round 18 and failing to play another match.

The 28-year-old said he was glad to be given the chance to once again don the red and black.

“I’m thrilled to sign on with the Bombers. We are building towards something special and I am excited to be a part of it,” McKernan told the club website.

“I felt this year I was able to contribute strongly to the side and I’m looking forward to continuing that over the next two years.

“Over the pre-season I want to build on my game and not rely solely on my marking but also offer defensive pressure in the forward line.

“I am eager to get back on the track and work hard over the off-season, and see what we can achieve as a team in 2019 and beyond.”

Coach John Worsfold said McKernan’s versatility made him a valuable part of Essendon’s future.

“Shaun plays an important role for our side as a strong marking forward who can play in the ruck as well.

“We are extremely happy to see Shaun fulfilling his potential and believe he will be an important part of our team in the future.

For the Magpies, Brodie Grundy and Jordan de Goey will be in focus, while the end could arrive for one of the game's greats - Gary Ablett.
