McKernan has only notched 62 games over his nine-year career at both Essendon and Adelaide but looked to have finally cemented a regular senior spot this year before injuring his hamstring in round 18 and failing to play another match.

The 28-year-old said he was glad to be given the chance to once again don the red and black.

“I’m thrilled to sign on with the Bombers. We are building towards something special and I am excited to be a part of it,” McKernan told the club website.

It's increasingly a moving feast when it comes to player retention and contracts but several players are in line to cash in as early as next year.In the revolving world that is AFL player contracts, there will be again be headlines aplenty through this off-season and into 2019. For the Kangaroos, they almost certainly will again come calling for Josh Kelly, whose two-year extension with Greater Western Sydney expires. Kelly had been offered a nine-year deal worth $10 million by the Kangaroos last year. For the Magpies, Brodie Grundy and Jordan de Goey will be in focus, while the end could arrive for one of the game's greats - Gary Ablett.
