Nintendo has returned to dedicated handheld gaming devices, announcing a smaller, lighter, all-in-one and portable only version of its popular Switch console.

The Switch Lite does not have removable controllers and can not connect to a TV as the original Nintendo Switch can, but in turn it offers a slightly improved battery life of three to seven hours depending on the game. (It can be played while charging with the included AC adapter.) The Switch Lite is also a less expensive option, coming in at $329.95.

Learn about Nintendo Switch Lite , part of the Nintendo Switch family of gaming systems. Dedicated to handheld play, Nintendo Switch Lite is perfect for gamers on the move.

Nintendo might be developing a cheaper , portable - only version of the Switch . It should be evident by now that the console is performing incredibly well for Nintendo . Said to place both affordability and portability at the forefront, Nikkei (via JapaneseNintendo) is reporting that Nintendo is eyeing up a

The original Nintendo Switch has a recommended retail price of $469, but can commonly be purchased for around $400.

The redesigned console is significantly smaller than the original, though the buttons are roughly the same size, and it sports a traditional D-pad on the left hand side in place of four individual buttons. It features a 5.5-inch touchscreen rather than a 6.2-inch, though keeps the same maximum resolution of 720p, and it weighs around 277g, compared to the original's 399g. It does not feature a kickstand.

The console uses a more economical processor since it doesn't need extra power to drive a higher resolution on a TV, which accounts for the battery savings and smaller exhaust grille.

Today, on July 10th, Nintendo announced the Switch Lite , a smaller and cheaper alternative to the mainline Switch . One of the immediate questions is what to do with games that are specifically designed for removable JoyCons? The new Switch Lite will support the use of extra JoyCons as well

The Nintendo Switch Lite , a slightly-smaller and purely- portable version of the Nintendo Switch , was announced by the company today, as The heavily-rumored alternate Switch model, initially stated to be revealed at E3, was announced early this morning out of the blue by the official Nintendo UK

Since the Switch Lite has integrated controllers, it lacks some features of the original Switch, including an IR camera and HD Rumble. The Lite is compatible with the original Switch's Joy-Con controllers if players want to use these functions or have a second player join them on the same screen. Alternatively, the Lite has all the same Wi-Fi connectivity as the original Switch, so owners of either can play together wirelessly.

For the most part the Switch Lite will play any of the thousands of games downloadable on the eShop or purchased at retail, but there are some party games (including Nintendo's own Super Mario Party and 1-2-Switch) that require you to swing around Joy-Con controllers. There are notices on game packaging and eShop screens in these cases.

Existing Switch owners may be tempted by the D-pad and more portable form factor, but the inability to play on the TV could be a turn-off. Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser told CNET the company has no plans to add the D-pad to Joy-Con controllers for use with the original Switch.

Smaller unit features non-removable controls, can't be docked to a TV.

Nintendo has just taken the wraps off an even more portable Switch Lite (US9), which has the controls built-in. It has to lose a few features to make room, so the screen is 5.5in rather than 6.2in, and you can’t hook it up to a TV to bypass the missing pixels. The IR Motion Camera has been removed

Yet the Switch Lite is likely to be a big hit with new Switch owners, particularly children and families. Not only is it smaller, more colourful and less expensive, but its all-in-one design potentially makes it sturdier and means it has no parts that can be lost.

The new Switch may also appeal to lapsed gamers and Nintendo fans, as most of the system's upcoming software has direct ties to the company's prior handheld systems, including Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Layton's Mystery Journey, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The Switch Lite launches alongside Link's Awakening on September 20 in grey, yellow or turquoise, with a special Pokemon-themed model following on November 8.
