Social network’s move comes as Facebook faces controversy over ads that promote misinformation.

Social media platform Twitter has announced it will ban all political advertising from next month.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced the policy on the platform on Thursday and said social media can help spread misleading messages.

“While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions,” Mr Dorsey said.

The decision stands in contrast to Facebook, which has faced backlash after admitting it would not fact check political advertisements.
