The numbers even eclipsed the weeks before and after Christmas 2018, and Australia Post is predicting another 20 per cent growth in sales for the US-inspired promotion this year.

Scams and pitfalls: What to watch out for

While browsing the stores with a few taps beats fighting the crowds for a carpark for some, there are some potential scams that digital customers should watch out for.

Online shopping fraudsters have so far cost Australians more than $4 million this year, passing last year's $3.28 million according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Scamwatch.

Fake sites or stores can look genuine, often offering luxury items at low prices, but the ACCC warns customers may get fakes or often nothing at all.

ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said shoes, smartphones and event tickets were some of the most commonly reported items scammers were trying to sell.

"Scammers often try to take advantage of people doing their Christmas shopping including in the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales," Ms Rickard said.

"Reported losses have tripled over the last three years and it is concerning that losses from this year are already so high."

Another common scam is sellers using real classified websites to sell an item, then telling the customer they are travelling and an "agent" will deliver it once the money is received.

The item is never delivered.

Ms Rickard says customers should do their research, and contact their bank as soon as possible if they think they've been scammed..

The complaints come days after reports of similar issues involving the Apple Watch. Frustrated customers told Business Insider that the retailer has not provided any information about whether it will honour the deals at a future date, when the devices are back in stock. "It doesn't sit right," Denver resident Laurel Lennon said.
