Pelicano in Sydney's ritzy Double Bay will shut on December 28 despite becoming one of the city's most sought-after nightlife spots since opening in 2012.

Other famous stars to have frequented the pop art-themed restaurant include Hollywood actor Gerard Butler, James Blunt and Cara Delevingne's sister Poppy.

Mr Becher claimed the building's landlord forced them out in a 'hostile takeover' even though the restaurant is thriving and still has six years remaining on its lease.

He said there was a demolition clause in their tenancy contract which meant they could be given notice to leave if renovation of the 1960s-dated Gaden House was required.

The closure comes after the historic modernist building's owners were met with a 2000-strong petition last year opposing their plan to add two levels of commercial floor space to Gaden House.

Pelicano will be open to the public for the final time on December 21, before hosting a final private send-off a week later, according to Good Food.
