Entertainment lobby group Live Performance Australia has slammed Google for abandoning its block on ticket reseller Viagogo from buying top spots in search results and called on the consumer watchdog to intervene.

The tech titan blocked Viagogo from buying higher rankings in search in July after the site was found to breach Google's advertising rules following widespread complaints and accusations that the site charges inflated prices for tickets, uses inflammatory language to pressure users into purchases and doesn't make it clear that it isn't an official ticket seller. The block was lifted last week.

The industry body has been rallying against Viagogo's ability to buy paid search-advertising since the first half of 2017.

A Google spokesman said any advertiser could appeal a suspension and, if they had made appropriate changes, could be eligible to re-start advertising.

"We still continue to enforce our policies and we will take action against ads or accounts that violate our policies," he said.

Google imposed new requirements in 2018 for ticket resellers looking to advertise on search that required them to disclose that they are a reseller, warn that prices might be higher than face values and provide clear details on extra fees and charges.

"The ACCC will assess on a case by case basis any allegations that any ticket resale sites are making potentially misleading statements," she said.

The Federal Court found in April, following ACCC action, that Viagogo misled consumers by claiming tickets were scarce, when this scarcity only applied to the site's availability of tickets, was using the word "official" in a way that was misleading and in some cases failed to disclose additional fees.
