The highest achievers in this year's HSC first-in-course awards were boys, with three students from North Sydney Boys High, Cranbrook and Sydney Grammar topping nine subjects ranging from German to mathematics.

But girls shone in STEM subjects, taking the top spots in the most difficult maths course, chemistry and Science Extension.

As the state's year 12 class of 2019 nervously awaits the release of their HSC results at 6am on Tuesday, the NSW Education Standards Authority is celebrating the students who finished first in a course at a ceremony at midday on Monday.

North Sydney Boys High student Samarth Shrivastava finished first in German Continuers and Extension, and equal first in Advanced Mathematics, while Adam Gottschalk from Sydney Grammar topped Biology, French Extension and Visual Arts.

Cranbrook's Jesse Caminer led the state in Chinese Continuers, English Extension 2 and English Advanced.

Young women fared well in STEM subjects, with James Ruse students Eunice Wah Yan Cheng topping the new Science Extension course and Jocelin Shing-Yan Hon leading the state in Maths Extension 2. The last female to top the hardest maths course was Shelley She in 2012.

There were also 18 first in course students from the Saturday School of Community Languages, and 11 from the NSW School of Languages.

James Ruse student Kim Zheng led the state in Maths Extension 1, James Bagnall from Mount St Patrick College finished first in Earth and Environmental Science, and Wenquan Lu from Barker College topped Physics.

Eight students topped the state in Advanced Mathematics. Five were from government selective schools, and the rest were from Knox Grammar, Trinity Catholic College Goulburn, and Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell noted that 790 students would receive a top achievers award for reaching a state ranking in a particular subject; 1449 would receive an all-rounder achievers award for gaining the top band in 10 units or more; and there would be 17,122 distinguished achievers who receive the top band in at least one subject.

Victoria to introduce new VCE maths subject .
A new, lower level maths subject will be offered to year 12 students, in a bid to boost the number of senior students studying maths and respond to employer concerns about the numeracy skills of young job seekers. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority has confirmed it will introduce foundation maths as a year 12 subject.This will increase the number of year 12 VCE maths subjects to four. It's hoped the new subject will attract students who would not otherwise choose a maths subject for year 12, as well as students undertaking the state's vocational high school certificate, VCAL.
