Why Apple, LG and others have given in to the notch

Why Apple, LG and others have given in to the notch LG's G7 ThinQ phone is the latest to follow the design “trend,” which embodies the compromise that companies make between aesthetics and function. Apple's iPhone X was the first mainstream phone to grab attention for its notch — and often not in a complimentary way. (Apple wasn't the first to introduce the notch; that distinction goes to Essential, the smartphone start-up founded by former Android head Andy Rubin.) The notch on the iPhone X was seen as a design compromise to make the screen larger. Many did not mince words, calling it "odd," "bad" and downright "ugly.

With much less power than the latest flagship phones, but smart software that knows how to counteract that, the Nokia 1 is the first sub-$200 smartphone I've used that hasn't made me want to throw it into a lake.

The unassuming $150 plastic handset comes in navy or red and has a characteristically Nokia look and feel. Like the recent and similarly-priced 3310, the Nokia 1's look reminds me of my earliest mobile phone experiences, but unlike the 3310 it doesn't literally emulate what it was like to use a mobile phone in the early 2000s.

That's thanks to Android Oreo Go Edition, an operating system from Google that offers the latest features while streamlining for less powerful devices. Oreo Go is a perfect fit for cheap, low-powered phones like the 1, which could act as a kid's first phone or a second handset you take camping.

In fact I was surprised to find that I adjusted very quickly to the 1, despite moving from a much more powerful phone that I use quite heavily. Switching between apps is noticeably sluggish, and the phone works best when you stick to doing one thing at a time, but once I adjusted to this we got along just fine.

The pre-installed Google apps like Maps, Gmail and Assistant are all special "Go" versions that, much like Google's Chrome OS, leave the heavy lifting to an internet browser rather than the device itself. Whether I was connected to 4G or Wi-Fi, these apps worked exactly as expected and quite quickly. All my stuff in the cloud — pictures, music, podcasts, contacts, documents, notes — were just as accessible here as anywhere else.

OnePlus 6 leak reveals more of its glass-centric design

OnePlus 6 leak reveals more of its glass-centric design OnePlus has been dribbling out details of its next phone for weeks on end, but one retailer may have revealed more than OnePlus was ready to show. WinFuture spotted an Amazon Germany listing (since removed) for the OnePlus 6 that included full images of the device -- no murky photos or teases here. True to expectations, the handset is dominated by its 6.3-inch display (complete with notch) at the front, and a glass back on at least the "mirror black" model. There's also a "midnight black" variant that appears to have a matte finish, although it's not certain this means a switch to aluminum.

Hands on : Hands on : The Nokia 1 runs Android Go Edition, ensuring this budget smartphone actually works well. Hands on: Nokia 1 . A bargain basement Android phone that actually works . Not yet rated By John McCann 2018-03-05T17:00:44.63Z Mobile phones .

Nokia started building new phones and this is one of the first . Not the smartest , but it does the trick when you need an "all-month-er".

This alone puts the Nokia 1 head and shoulders above similarly priced phones you might find at the supermarket.

A Google app also provides a handy collection of popular functions you'd usually need a separate app for, like a library of GIFs, Google Translate and weather forecasts. There's a huge bank of links to web locations like social media networks, streaming sites, shopping services, news outlets and games too, so even if you never add an app besides what's pre-installed you can get pretty much anything done.

Elsewhere this is essentially the same Android 8.1 Oreo I run on my Google Pixel 2 XL, except it's been optimised to run smoothly on the Nokia 1's meagre 1GB of RAM and quad-core 1.1 GHz CPU. Running full Oreo on a machine like this would be a challenge, but here it all moves fairly fluidly.

You have access to the Play Store where you can get any app you need, but the store will helpfully highlight programs that will run well on the less-powerful device. This means if you really need the full-fat Gmail you can have it, you're just not guaranteed to get a good experience. If you're looking at an app and a similar, less intensive one is available (for example Facebook Lite rather than Facebook), the store will tell you. Surprisingly most games I installed worked totally fine, with the low resolution of the 4.5-inch screen making up for the lack of grunt.

YouTube and Netflix perform totally fine here as well, and the maximum 480p resolution the tiny screen puts out means you won't even use that much data. It's not something I'd want to watch movies or Game of Thrones on, but it does the job. I also had no trouble with various music streaming apps, and device-controlling apps like Sonos or Google Home were fine, although my password manager hated not being able to run in the background properly.

Live exports won't be banned in coming months

Live exports won't be banned in coming months There will be no ban on live sheep exports to the Middle East over the northern summer this year, despite the RSPCA and Australian Veterinarians Association saying there is no way to protect sheep against potentially fatal heat stress. The Government set up the McCarthy review into the summer trading of sheep to the Middle East after the broadcast of shocking footage of sheep dying and suffering heat stress during voyages last year. These images prompted widespread demands for an end to the northern summer live export trade to the Middle East. The live sheep trade is worth $249 million a year.

The Nokia 1 has a 2, 150 mAh battery that lasted 9 h 12 m in our practical Wi-Fi test. The Nokia 1 is a decent budget smartphone that gets the most out of its limited resources. The removable battery, good display and interchangeable covers all impressed us.

It’s a part of the Android One program, which means that smartphone manufacturers get to ship the phones with stock Android. The Nokia 6. 1 costs 0 in the U.S., and it’s available now from Best Buy, Amazon, and B&H. The phone only works on GSM networks, so it’s only compatible with

If you're on a limited data cap and want to save as many of your precious megabytes as possible, Oreo Go makes it pretty easy to restrict data at the touch of a button, only letting apps you've whitelisted have unrestricted access. As always, you can also program a monthly data cutoff. If you want to get really extreme, an FM radio is included so you don't have to stream music at all.

On the hardware side the device has everything you need to make use of Google's smart software. There's only 8GB of on-board storage, which isn't much if you're wanting to keep your videos, pics and music locally, but you can add a microSD card for more room. The brilliant Files Go app, which I'm going to install on my main phone, helps you keep your storage tidy or make transfers to nearby friends. There's Bluetooth for your headphones (and a 3.5mm jack, of course), but the rear-firing loudspeaker is screechy and awkwardly placed. There's a removable battery, which means no waterproofing but easy repairs and replacements.

The 5MP camera is slow, meaning fast-moving subjects or low light conditions present a challenge. It shoots video in SD, which looks ok on the little screen but not good elsewhere. There is a flash and a 2MP selfie shooter included.

Out of the box I found it impossible to get shots of any human that didn't end up looking completely haunted. As it turns out the HDR function (which takes multiple exposures for better colour reproduction) was on by default, and the Nokia 1 just couldn't handle it. Once I turned HDR off sharp images became possible. In perfect light conditions you can take acceptable-looking shots, but this is probably the area where I missed a more modern phone the most.

This might be a very basic phone, but it provides the lion's share of the functionality and connectivity you're going to need. Every $100 between the Nokia 1 and something like a Google Pixel just adds little bits of speed, convenience and polish, plus non-essentials like a competent camera and a screen you'll actually like watching Netflix on.

Of course almost all of the best things about this phone are provided by Google's Android software, with Nokia merely putting together a pleasant-looking and functional device that meets the software's minimum specs. (And it also sells colourful snap-on replacement covers. Remember those?) This means you're likely to get a similar experience out of any device running Oreo Go Edition.

But, on the other hand, there are no other such phones being sold at retailers in Australia. This makes the Nokia 1 pretty easy to recommend to anyone looking for a sub-$200 smartphone, as it's the only way you're going to get a brand new device with up-to-date Android. The only alternative would be to hit up eBay for a used Samsung Galaxy S4 or similar, and while that would certainly get you as nicer screen, more competent camera and similar performance compared to the Nokia 1, you'd also be stuck on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop (meaning incompatibility with newer apps and features), have years-old security updates (meaning vulnerability to hackers) and various other issues that come with using a five-year-old device (like failing batteries).
