A huge search and rescue operation is under way for a British hiker who has been missing in New Zealand for five days.

Darren Myers, 49, was trekking in the Tararua Ranges on the North Island alone when he lost contact with his family.

Mr Myers, who is from the UK but lives in Wellington, was reported missing after failing to reach the end point on Saturday afternoon.

Rescuers are attempting to locate Mr Myers by land and air, with around 50 people out looking for him.

Their efforts were hampered by wintry weather on Wednesday.

The hiker and his wife Kim Shaw relocated to New Zealand from Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire, according to local news site Stuff.

She said she last heard from her husband by text on Thursday.

She added: "I have been impressed and made to feel at ease by SAR (search and rescue) personnel.

"We are staying positive and not giving up hope."

Mr Myers' brother-in-law Duncan Styles said the hiker was "really thorough" and enjoyed solo expeditions.

He also said Mr Myers' disappearance had been "very, very difficult" for their family.

"We're primarily looking at the northern crossing area and we've got approximately 50 searchers out in the field.

"We're throwing all available resources into the right areas as we know from experience is the right thing to do.

"We're looking at other options also, including infrared resources later in the day."
