A 74-year-old hiker who was injured in a fall on an Arizona mountain has endured a wild ride in a stretcher as she was being hoisted to the safety of a rescue helicopter.

The stretcher spun wildly for more than 40 seconds, with the crew raising and lowering the woman several times while trying to slow down the spinning.

Phoenix Fire Department officials said the woman was treated for dizziness and nausea but suffered no other ill effects when the stretcher spun ever-faster in the backwash of the helicopter's rotor blades.

ABC15 Arizona's television chopper recorded the incident as the rescue crew lifted the woman from Piestewa Peak on Tuesday morning (local time).

Speaking at a local news conference, Paul Apolinar, the chief pilot of the police department's aviation unit, said the violent rotations were due to a line that was not operating properly.

"Sometimes when we bring the helicopter up from the ground, [the basket] will start to spin," he said.

Mr Apolinar said the potential for a stretcher to rotate in such a wild manner is "a known phenomenon in the hoist rescue industry".

Eventually, the rescue helicopter's forward motion slowed the spinning enough to bring the woman into the cabin.
