This morning police said a body was found in search for the missing tramper, Darren Myers, in the Tararua ranges.

Mr Myers, 49, from the Wellington suburb of Karori, failed to return from the Northern Crossing on 1 June.

His brother-in-law Duncan Styles confirmed the body was that of Mr Myers.

He said the family felt gutted over the news.

Sergeant Tony Matheson sad Mr Myers died from a fall that has happened suddenly and probably occurred last Thursday.

Sergeant Matheson said the weather had been difficult and several areas were being slowly worked off, and Mr Myers is believed to have probably been trying to get down to a stream area when he fell.

One of the hardest things the family had to bear was the thought of him not being seen by rescuers, or in a lot of pain, said Duncan Styles. It was a relief to know that had not been the case, he said.

Photo: NZ Police . Darren Myers , 48, failed to return on Saturday last week from a planned five-day tramp across the mountains. Police said they searched near the Waingawa River and Arete Stream and replaced teams that had been deployed for four days.

The site had been searched several times already, but remained an area of interest and it was due to the good work of the helicopter company with a pilot going back in there this morning.

Search teams had been trying to find Mr Myers after he failed to arrive at Holdsworth in Wairarapa.

At the time he went missing the ranges were hit by bad weather and snow.
