A guilt-ridden neighbour of Jacinda Ardern , the prime minister of New Zealand , revealed Wednesday that he was Paddles died in November 2017, shortly after Ms Ardern won office, but the full circumstances of the death were never publicly revealed , leading to curiosity about who killed the cat .

Chris initially thought Paddles had survived the accident until he was told by a neighbour the cat was missing and the pair eventually found the dead cat lying behind a nearby fence.

He has recalled the moment he confessed and broke the sad news to Ms Ardern partner's Clarke Gayford.

'I went over and knocked on the door and Clarke came out. He was really nice and said 'look, it could have happened to anyone'. He was clearly very upset,' Chris told Stuff.

Chris' young children wrote a heartfelt condolence card for Ms Ardern and her partner, pleading for their dad to not be sent to jail.

He received a voicemail from Ms Ardern a month later, apologising for what he went through and thanked his kids for the card.

Chris confessed to Ms Ardern in person several months later at a local park.

'I told her I was aware of where she lived and I basically confessed that I was the one who ran over Paddles,' he said.

'I said, "I'm so sorry", and then she said, "No, I'm sorry" and it kind of went round in circles.'

The late cat still has her own Twitter page with more than 10,400 followers, which has been renamed The Ghost of Paddles.

The page posted a tweet and a link to Chris' confession on Wednesday.

'I forgive you,' the tweet read.

There was also a post from Paddles when Ms Ardern gave birth to daughter Neve last June.

'I am purring. Congratulations, Mum and Dad,' the tweet read.

Ms Ardern took to Facebook at the time of Paddle's tragic death to share her grief.
