Sweden's Tallest Peak Has Lost Its Title, Thanks To Climate Change

Sweden's Tallest Peak Has Lost Its Title, Thanks To Climate Change The heat waves that baked Europe over the past two summers have been directly linked to climate change, and this year’s had the added oomph of coming amidst the hottest month in recorded history for the planet. While there were obviously more serious impacts from the record heat, such as the deaths of roughly 1,500 people in France or billions of tons of ice falling into the ocean off Greenland, Sweden’s shrinking mountain is a reminder that climate change means everything changes. And it highlights the plight of mountain ice everywhere, as meltwaters go from a trickle into a raging river.

A Queenstown woman has died in a skiing accident at Coronet Peak.

NZSki - which operates Coronet Peak - confirmed to Newshub that the incident took place at about 9am on Saturday at the bottom of the South Island skifield's Sugar's Run.

Medical responders - including a doctor, nurse and patrol - were on the scene "minutes afterwards and began CPR", according to a statement.

St John Ambulance paramedics arrived at 9:45am, when CPR was stopped. Police were then contacted and have been examining the scene.

It is understood the woman lost control and crashed into a fence post, NZME reports.

Paul Anderson, chief executive of NZSki, said staff were working with authorities to understand what happened.
