Proscutors say Virgilio poured gasoline on a sleeping Michael Gonzalez on June 7, 2012. She lit mail on fire and tossed it inside, shutting the door when she saw Gonzalez get up and yell “hot, hot.”

Gonzalez died from severe burns and smoke inhalation. The couple had been celebrating his 24th birthday.

Virgilio, who had her child taken away by the state, told the court that mental illness drove her to kill Gonzalez in the Anchorage home. Virgilio’s brother had said her behavior changed after she began experimenting with drugs, including Oxcyotin, marijuana and cocaine.

She has been active with a faith-based therapeutic program at the women’s prison where she is being held.

Virgilio had agreed to a plea deal earlier this year, and the state agreed to a sentence of 30 to 70 years.

The judge said Virgilio, 32, did a “horrific, horrific, thing” as he issued the 99-year sentence.

“I believe as long as she gets out at a late enough age to where she’s not a danger to me, my family or society, I’m OK with it,” said Michael Gonzalez’s brother Austine.
