The capture and release of Guzman has seen him elevated to the status of Sinaloa Cartel heavyweight alongside El Chapo's three remaining sons.

"We're facing a new generation of organised crime that doesn't respect civilians," head of Sinaloa state security Cristobal Castaneda told Reuters.

Attorney general Alejandro Gertz has said he will launch an investigation into the brazen attack.

"It is not just about the actions of one public servant or one criminal. We will be analysing all the facts… clarify what crimes may have been committed, then prosecute and punish them, without exception," he told reporters.

Officials also met American ambassador to Mexico, Christopher Landau, on Monday to discuss how to curb illegal arms trafficking after the belief many of the guns seen in the Culiacan clashes were made in the US.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Lopez Obrador discussed the matter with US President Donald Trump in a phone call Saturday, and that he expected the conversation to mark a "turning point" on the issue.

Ovidio Guzman is one of at least 10 children of "El Chapo", who is currently serving a life prison term in the United States after being convicted in July of trafficking hundreds of tons of drugs into the US over the course of 25 years.
