Fugitive Brendon Spurrell was arrested Friday night after a week evading police.

Ottawa police tweeted just before 7 p.m. that Spurrell had been caught, crediting front-line officers and the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Unit for his arrest.

Spurrell was on the lam after he was released from the Innes Road jail by mistake while awaiting trial for sex assault and death threats. He was accidentally released from jail due to an administrative error following trial for breach of probation on Jan. 10. He was transported back to jail after trial and then released.

It was June 14, and the detective told him he had new charges — including sex assault — and it was best that he turn himself in, court records reveal. Instead, Spurrell allegedly stole a vehicle and went on the lam only to be captured by the Ontario Provincial Police later that day.

Provincial authorities are investigating what went wrong last week, including whether or not there was a clerical error at the courthouse.

Ottawa police issued a press release earlier this week describing Spurrell as so dangerous that he should not be approached. The police department also released a recent surveillance image of the wanted man.

In February 2019, Spurrell was sentenced to two years and two months in prison for sexually assaulting a minor after he met her online, but was released for time served in pre-trial custody. A few months later, he was charged with more crimes, including another sexual assault.

And earlier this year, during a bail review hearing, Spurrell erupted in a fit of rage once he realized he was losing his bid for bail.

He called the judge a w—-e and hurled vile, racial slurs at a police officer and threatened to torch the prosecutor.

Spurrell represents himself and proposed a bail plan — absent of sureties — that had him living at a shelter. The judge refused his bail and sent him back to jail.

Spurrell wasn’t a model inmate. According to jail incident reports, Spurrell faced internal charges for assaulting three inmates last summer. He pleaded guilty to a jailhouse attack last August in which he beat another inmate with a weighted sock.

At his Jan. 2 bail review hearing, the judge also noted that Spurrell tried to persuade the complainant at his upcoming trial to recant her statements to Ottawa police.

The court has issued a warrant for his arrest and so far he remains at large.

Spurrell is white, about 5’10” and 160 pounds. He has short black hair and blue eyes.
