The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control with four engines and a ladder truck.

Jones said the family was "some of the nicest people" he has met. He said the father and his sons would do some yard work for some of his neighbors from time to time.

On Saturday, as investigators continued to inspect the scene, motorists would slow to gaze at the charred remains of the single-story home, but the neighborhood was quiet.

He said it may be next week before the cause of the fire is known.

Clinton Public School District Superintendent Tim Martin said Saturday that four of the children killed in the fire attended Clinton Park Elementary School, Lovett Elementary and Clinton Junior High.

"Clinton is a very close-knit community, so when something so tragic like this happens, it affects the entire community," Martin said.

Brittany Presley was a second-grade teacher at Reuben B. Myers Canton School of Arts and Sciences and her son was a pre-K student at the school, Martin said. The Canton Public School District in a statement Saturday said it was saddened by the tragic loss. It also said grief counselors will be available Monday for students and staff.

"Mrs. Presley was a team leader who was a good, nurturing, and loving teacher who gave her all for her students. Her compassionate heart and giving spirit will forever live on in the hearts of the countless lives she touched," the district wrote.
