A nearly $2 trillion stimulus bill to save the nation's economy from the coronavirus outbreak faces key decisions on Capitol Hill amid sparring between Republicans and Democrats.Ahead of the vote, Senators clashed angrily over delays that had bogged down the giant bill, reflecting uncertainty about whether Congress would be able to reach a deal in the coming hours. Some lawmakers had hoped to reach an agreement three days ago, but talks kept breaking down even as they negotiated throughout the weekend.

Trump wants ‘the country opened,’ but easing coronavirus restrictions now would be disastrous, experts say

In the debate pitting the economic costs of coronavirus restrictions against the health costs, experts say the evidence points to the need for continued social distancing and closures.Health experts point to overwhelming evidence from around the world that closing businesses and schools and minimizing social contact are crucial to avoid exponentially mounting infections. Ending the shutdown now in America would be disastrous, many say, because the country has barely given those restrictions time to work, and because U.S. leaders have not pursued alternative strategies used in other countries to avert the potential deaths of hundreds of thousands.
