ROME (Reuters) - Italy reported on Tuesday 78 additional deaths from the new coronavirus, against 92 the previous day, bringing its toll from the COVID-19 epidemic to 32,955 dead.

The number of confirmed cases of contamination in Italy now stands at 230,555, an increase of 397 compared to Monday, when the progression had been 300 cases, said the Agency for Civil Protection.

Some 52,942 people are currently affected by the disease in the peninsula, against 55,300 on Monday.

The number of people treated in intensive care units is also down, to 521, or 20 less in 24 hours.

Of all the people infected in Italy, 144,658 are considered cured against 141,981 Monday.
