CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday ordered the European Union ’s envoy to leave the country within 72 hours , after the EU sanctioned a group of Venezuelan officials for acting against the opposition-run congress.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro raises his voice against the European Union. Monday, June 29, he gave 72 hours to the head of the European Union delegation in Caracas to leave the Venezuela , in reaction to the sanctions adopted the same day by the EU against eleven Venezuelan officials. The Socialist President announced the expulsion of the EU representative, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, during a speech at the presidential palace in Miraflores.

"Who are they to try to impose themselves by the threat? Who are they? Enough! That is why I decided to give the European Union ambassador 72 hours to leave our country" , said Nicolas Maduro. "We will settle this in 72 hours (...) We will provide her with a plane to go, but we will put our affairs in order with the European Union," he continued. Venezuela has suspended commercial flights due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

The EU sanctioned eleven Venezuelan officials involved in actions against the opposition to the government on Monday Nicolas Maduro, including Luis Parra who tried to replace Juan Guaido in May as President of the Parliament. Juan Guaido is recognized as interim president of Venezuela by around fifty countries.
