SANTE-CORONAVIRUS-PORTUGAL: Coronavirus: Portugal extends its restrictions until mid-October
LISBON (Reuters) - The Portuguese government extended restrictions on gathering and opening of businesses intended to fight the epidemic caused by the new coronavirus on Thursday until mid-October, as the country faces, like everywhere in Europe, an increase in new daily cases of contamination.
The state of health emergency in force since September 15 will not be lifted before October 14. Gatherings will therefore continue to be limited to 10 people and businesses will have to close between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the latest.
The government has also decided to extend the ban on festivals and other major public events until the end of the year.
"The number (of cases) has been increasing for about five weeks," Presidency Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva told a press conference, adding that the government would reassess the situation in two weeks.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control on Thursday ranked Portugal among the countries showing a "worrying trend" in terms of infections, although the risk remains moderate.
