The PiS boss has not held a government office for years - and was nevertheless the most powerful politician in Poland. The fact that Kaczynski no longer (only) wants to be a puller reveals a lot about the state of the government.

Taskmaster for rival wings

The project had triggered violent tensions in the national conservative government camp in recent weeks. Kaczynski's presence is intended to discipline the rival wings. The 71-year-old was Prime Minister in Poland from 2006 to 2007. Since his party's takeover of power in 2015, he was considered to be an important puller even without a government post. Under Kaczynski's influence, national interests have come to the fore in recent years - for example, in climate or migration policy. In recent years there has been repeated speculation in Warsaw about his return to government.

Hate campaigns against LGBT

A controversial personality is the future education and science minister Przemyslaw Czarnek. The 43-year-old law professor has excelled with smear campaigns against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people (LGBT). "These people are not the same as normal people," he said in June as a member of President Andrzej Duda's campaign staff.

Duda himself, who secured a second term in the run-off election on July 12, had bet on homophobic tones in the election campaign. Just recently, 50 ambassadors and representatives of international organizations called on Poland to respect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.
