In the event of a "material violation of the resolution and objectives" of the nuclear pact, the statement read, "the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to take all necessary countermeasures to safeguard its national interests ".

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said on his Twitter account that the international community had "protected" the nuclear deal and on Sunday marked "the normalization of Iran's cooperation with the world".

The IRGC will likely play a more active political role in Iran, which means talks with the US are unlikely to resume. Most Western analysts expect Iran to start a new round of negotiations with the US in the new year regardless of who wins the election. This prediction has some merit, as Iran’s economy has been in dire straits since Trump’s controversial 2018 decision to withdraw the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal) and impose a new round of sanctions on the country.
