WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration has officially supported South Korea's trade minister to become the next director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), saying that Yoo Myung-hee is an accomplished trade negotiator who has the skills to lead the trade body at a "very difficult time."

"There have been no multilateral tariff negotiations for 25 years, the dispute settlement system has spiraled out of control and too few members meet basic transparency obligations. The WTO is in dire need of major reform "the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said in a statement.

"The WTO must be led by a person with real and practical experience in the field".
