The Christmas holidays, cold weather and shopping season are now rapidly approaching, just as COVID-19 cases continue their uptick, in the United States. That means some people will be shopping in person at local stores, and others will shop online. In both cases, hand sanitizers might be on that list again.

Two brands of hand sanitizer are being recalled by their manufacturers due to methanol, according to the Food and Drug Administration . The recalls come after the agency warned consumers against buying more than a dozen brands of hand sanitizer that tested positive for the toxic substance
"Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning," the FDA said this summer.
Those symptoms include, but aren't limited to:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Permanent blindness
- Seizures
- Coma
- Permanent damage to the nervous system
- Death
"Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk," the FDA said.
Though hand sanitizer is commonly recommended to help keep your hands clean while in public—or even inside your home—so many of them have been discovered to have methanol, which can be toxic if either ingested or infiltrated wrongly through skin.
