We’re Giving Up On Afghanistan—And the Americans Still There
Nemo resideo is a Latin phrase that means, “Leave no one behind.” It is such a fundamental American value that this commitment is embedded in the creed of several branches of the U.S. military. Yet some American citizens are being left behind now that the last plane has left Kabul on Monday. “We believe there are still a small number of Americans—under 200 and likely closer to 100–who remain in Afghanistan, and want to leave,” Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Monday. This contradicts Joe Biden’s previous comments. During an August 18 interview with George Stephanopoulos, Biden said, "If there's American citizens left, we're gonna stay to get them all out.— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) September 5, 2021
A State Department spokesperson told Newsweek that they "do not have a reliable means to confirm the basic details of charter flights, including who may be organizing them, the number of U.S. citizens and other priority groups on-board, the accuracy of the rest of the manifest, and where they plan to land, among many other issues."
Representative Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, toldon Sunday that it was " , where they're not going to allow American citizens to leave until they get full recognition from the United States of America."
White House Chief of Stafftold on Sunday that " " U.S. citizens were still in Afghanistan. Last week on Monday, Secretary of State said during a press conference that less than 200, and likely closer to 100, Americans that wanted to leave were still in the country.
Donald Trump Gave Joe Biden 'Hospital Pass' on Afghanistan, Says Tony Blair's Defense Secretary
As Tony Blair criticizes Joe Biden's withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, his former U.K. defense secretary Geoff Hoon defended the American president.Hoon, who served as U.K. defense secretary from October 1999 to May 2005, suggested that former President Donald Trump bears much of the blame for the chaotic scenes under Biden that have humiliated the U.S. and its allies.
"We're trying to determine exactly how many. We're going through manifests and calling and texting through our lists," Blinken told reporters at the time.
Late last week, Ascend—which teaches young women leadership through athletics—posted to its website about the difficulty it was having helping evacuate the Afghan refugees and U.S. nationals
"There are 600 people, including US citizens, green card holders, and members of Ascend, who have been waiting on an airplane outside of Kabul trying to leave for the past two days. We call of [sic] the US State Department to help get the plane off the ground and get these vulnerable civilians to safety," the organization wrote.
"We hope visibility will add pressure to force a solution. Six days of talks are not encouraging," Ascend's executive director Marina LeGree told CBS News on Sunday.
Other lawmakers took aim at Biden, as the reports of the potential hostage situation circulated on Sunday.
"As Kamala campaigns in California and Biden goes back on his Delaware retreat, there are still Americans and allies trying to get out of Afghanistan. They have planes. They are ready to go," Representative Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican, tweeted.
Biden's post-Ida promises to Gulf Coast ring hollow after Afghanistan disaster, Mark Meadows says
Biden's post-Ida promises to Gulf Coast ring hollow after Afghanistan disaster, Mark Meadows says Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Thursday questioned President Biden’s promise not to leave Hurricane Ida survivors behind, comparing it to Biden's promise to evacuate Americans stranded in Afghanistan. "Joe Biden just told hurricane survivors they ‘won’t be left behind,’ which would be comforting words had he not just said the exact same thing last week, and then turned his back—leaving hundreds of Americans behind in Afghanistan," Meadows tweeted. "Then and now. Biden’s words are empty.
"But Taliban won't let them, and Biden burned up any leverage we had," he wrote.
Senator John Boozman, an Arkansas Republican, criticized the Biden administration as well." Americans and our partners were left behind in Afghanistan because of Pres. Biden's disastrous withdrawal. I'm pressing the administration for answers, including who remains as well as whether and how the individuals we did evacuate were vetted," the GOP lawmaker tweeted.
Newsweek reached out to Ascend and the White House for further comment but did not immediately receive a response.
Biden has received widespread criticism for the chaotic end to nearly two decades of war in Afghanistan. The administration of former Presidentsigned the peace deal with the Taliban in February 2020. That initial agreement would have withdrawn all U.S. forces from Afghanistan by May of this year.
After Biden took office, he extended the withdrawal deadline to September 11 and then moved it forward to August 31. But the Taliban regained near total control of Afghanistan, two weeks ahead of Biden's withdrawal date. The maintained control of Kabul's international airport and frantically worked to evacuate some Americans, U.S. allies and thousands of Afghan refugees. Some 116,000 people were evacuated within just over two weeks.
Tucker Carlson: Our military has been lying to us for 20 years
Tucker Carlson highlights the military establishment's claim that "progress" was being made in Afghanistan over the past 20 years before the nation quickly fell to the Taliban. It was a harsh assessment, obviously though arguably true, the joint chiefs of staff are the nation's highest-ranking military officers. Their job is to follow the order of elected officials and protect the country, no matter how much their feelings may be hurt. But in this case, that's not what happened because the rules are different now. According to U.S.
