  Poll shows rising demand for climate action Ahead of COP26, a BBC World Service poll finds growing support for strong political leadership.The survey of over 30,000 people finds that 56% want their countries to play a leadership role at the critical COP26 meeting next week.

World leaders, leading scientists and environmental activists will converge this week in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 26th Conference of Parties (COP), an annual event focused on issues related to the climate crisis and global emissions.

Originally scheduled for last year, COP26 was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s conference comes a few months after a United Nations report warned that extreme weather and rising seas are happening faster than expected, labelling it a “code red” for humanity.

The findings by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are adding extra pressure on COP26 delegates to take significant steps to prevent the worst effects of global warming.

China’s President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are among those not attending.

The Duke of Cambridge, 39, was pictured shaking hands with the American entrepreneur - the world's richest man - at the climate conference in Glasgow yesterday. The pair are said to have discussed the newly launched Earthshot Prize, an environmental award scheme set up by the Cambridges' Royal Foundation. The image, shared on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's official Twitter page, was accompanied with the caption: 'Great to meet Jeff Bezos earlier today to discuss the Earthshot Prize and how we scale up our Winners’ and Finalists’ incredible solutions.
