From the pleasure, a nerve-wracking adventure became: In the world-famous winegrowing town of Rüdesheim there was a technical breakdown at the village of the village. The tourists caught at lofty height had to be saved.
Rüdesheim is the highlight of a trip to the Rhine. Many international tourists come to the Hessian city to enjoy the flair of a vineyard. A ride on the almost 1.4 kilometer gondola lift, which floats up from the old town over the vineyards to the Niederwald monument, is part of the mandatory program. This pleasure ended abruptly in the late Friday afternoon. Because of a technical defect on the hydraulics, the train stopped. Rescue workers then had to free the passengers from the gondolas.
The passengers were caught in the gondolas hanging up to 14 meters above the earth for almost three hours. A total of 41 passengers were saved from 20 gondolas. "The people who are rather anxious were immediately looked after by special rescue workers," said Michael Ehresmann, spokesman for the fire brigades and disaster protection in the Rheingau-Taunus district, the Hessischer Rundfunk.
