The World Needs to Start Planning for the Fire Age

The World Needs to Start Planning for the Fire Age The science of when to evacuate a community—and how—is still in its infancy. The reason for this is that wildfire-evacuation research is still in its infancy. “Wildfires only started to emerge as a major disaster in recent years,” Xilei Zhao, a professor in the University of Florida’s Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering, wrote to me over email. Even so, fire experts told me, there’s enough of an understanding now to start creating a playbook, one that could save lives.

State of emergency, evacuations after ‘explosive’ California fire

State of emergency, evacuations after ‘explosive’ California fire Drought and high temperatures have led to increasingly dangerous wildfires in the western US in recent years.Governor Gavin Newsom on Saturday declared a state of emergency in Mariposa County as the Oak fire, which began a day earlier, spread over 4,800 hectares (11,900 acres).

More than 20 years of drought and rising temperatures, exacerbated by climate change, have returned California more vulnerable than ever to forest fires. The two most devastating years were recorded in 2020 and 2021, based on the number of hectares burned.

The County of Siskiyou, the Théâtre de l'Indie where the Klamath National Forest is located, has around 44,000 inhabitants, according to the Census Office of the United States.

An emergency declaration by the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, allows residents to access federal aid and unlocks state resources.

A red alert, indicating dangerous fire conditions, is underway. No deaths or injury has been reported.
