The trip out with the boys takes almost eight hours

But the trip out with the first group of boys was a much longer, and more delicate operation.

The ABC's South-East Asia correspondent Liam Cochrane is at the cave, and he says to get out of the complex the boys have to wade and dive through floodwaters, before climbing and walking to the cave entrance.

"Today is D-Day": Rescuers begin mission to extract Thai cave boysThirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit would attempt to bring the boys – some of whom are as young as 11 and not strong swimmers – through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver earlier this week.

Thai Navy SEAL says 4 members of soccer team are out of the cave . With the entire round trip taking roughly 11 hours to complete, it could be days before We 're awaiting news from the cave , but here's what we know about the rescue . Thailand Cave Rescue : Oxygen Levels Inside Cave Fallen To

As rescue operations continue in Thailand , we 've learned some details about how experts got seven people out of the cave .

The narrowest gap during the dive is just 38cm wide.

"That's just a little bit bigger than a standard school ruler, just enough room for you to fit your head through," Cochrane said.

"So the boys would have had to be pushed through that gap and the experts with them would have to take off their air tanks and push them through as well."

Once the boys finish the dive section, they're handed to a second group of rescuers (including some Australians) who help them climb about 2km to the cave entrance.

Cochrane says there are ropes in place in some sections, because the climb is so slippery and tricky.

Healthy and demanding fried rice: first boys rescued from Thai cave in hospital

Healthy and demanding fried rice: first boys rescued from Thai cave in hospital The first four boys rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand were in good health and demanding fried rice in hospital on Monday, the head of the rescue team said, as divers resumed operations to bring out the remaining members of the group. The bid to rescue the boys - aged between 11 and 16 - and their 25-year-old soccer coach got going again after a break late on Sunday to replenish the team's oxygen supplies and make other preparations deep inside the cave.

• The first four rescued team members were at the hospital, military and local officials said. But it will be hours before other boys can start the trip . The Facebook page for the Thai Navy SEALS announced that “Wild Boar No. 4 is out of the cave ,” in a reference to the team’s mascot name, the Wild Boars.

Thai cave rescue : What we know about the Wild Boars soccer team. First, experts were sent in to teach the boys how to use scuba gear. During the hours-long trip out of the cave , each boy was accompanied underwater by two divers.

Cochrane says the boys have been paired up with two expert divers for the trip out of the cave.

"They were guided through on a kind of a buddy system," he said.

"The man who is leading this rescue operation described them as having the boys underneath them and swimming below and guiding them through the waters with almost no visibility."

Because the boys have never scuba dived before, they've been given full-face scuba masks so they can breathe through their mouth and nose.

We don't know which of the boys came out first

The names of the four boys who have been rescued haven't been released yet.

Rescuers have stopped now to replenish air supplies

"You can imagine with so many people helping out along the way, they'll be going through a lot of air, so a lot of logistics," Cochrane said

As far as we know, the rescue effort will begin again at 10am (AEST).

Officials say it could take up to four days to rescue the entire group.

Unfortunately, it's started raining again at the rescue site, but we're unclear how much of an impact it's having on the efforts to free the boys.

"There's a lot of pumping going on in the cave complex, so we can only hope that they're managing to keep the water levels stable, at least, and keep the currents relatively calm," Cochrane said.
