Why is Robert Durst on trial?

Durst faces one count of first-degree murder for the point-black shooting of his close friend, Susan Berman at her Beverly Hills, Los Angeles home in 2000.

Berman was found dead shortly before investigators were set to speak with her about the 1982 disappearance of Durst's first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.

Durst has long maintained he had nothing to do with Berman's death or his wife's disappearance. He has also pleaded not guilty to Berman’s murder.

Durst has said the last time he saw his first wife was when he dropped her off at a train station in Westchester, New York, so she could head back to medical school in the city in 1982.

Durst allegedly killed Berman, his friend from college and the daughter of a Las Vegas mobster, to keep her from telling police what she knew about his wife's disappearance.

What will happen in court?

Durst remains jailed without bail and will appear in a Los Angeles court tomorrow for arraignment.

The murder charge against him includes the special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and killing a witness to a crime. There is also an allegation that he personally used a handgun to carry out Berman’s murder.

At the end of the preliminary proceedings that were continued over several months, Durst's lawyer, David Chesnoff, argued that there was no hard evidence — such as DNA, fingerprints or witnesses — linking him to Berman's killing.

NEW ORLEANS --A New York real estate heir has pleaded guilty in Louisiana to a weapons Robert Durst had been charged with illegally carrying a .38-caliber revolver. Defense attorney Richard DeGuerin told Moriarty Durst is eager to face trial in California so he can prove he didn't kill Berman.

Durst , who has a troubled history with the law, appears to make a shocking confession in HBO's "The Jinx.".

Prosecutors will try to make the connection between Berman's death and the mystery around Kathleen Durst's disappearance, which they want to show as the foundation for the motive for Berman's slaying.

Berman told friends over the years that Durst acknowledged killing his wife and said she helped him cover his tracks. Prosecutors hope to use those hearsay statements at trial, which defence lawyers have vigorously challenged.

Berman told one friend who testified at an earlier hearing that if anything happened to her, Durst would be the culprit.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole.

The 'confession'

Durst was arrested in New Orleans in March 2015, just hours before the airing of the final episode of HBO’s “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.”

He was interviewed extensively for the documentary which examined the disappearance of his wife, and the killings of Berman and a Texas neighbour, Morris Black, in 2001.

The HBO series created a sensation after he was heard during the finale muttering to himself on a live microphone: “You’re caught! What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

The apparent off-camera confession, in addition to an anonymous note believed to be handwritten by Durst, led to his arrest before the documentary’s finale was broadcast. Police found guns, cash, fake ID and a mask.

The Morris Black trial

But he argued he'd shot Black in self-defence during a struggle and then cut him up in a panic.

Prosecutors argued Durst had planned Black's killing in order to steal his identity and escape the attention of New York investigators looking into his wife's disappearance. Jurors acquitted him in that murder trial.

The case inspired the 2010 film, All Good Things, starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. In the DVD commentary, Durst said what was depicted in the film was very close to what happened.
