Why is Robert Durst on trial?

Durst faces one count of first-degree murder for the point-black shooting of his close friend, Susan Berman at her Beverly Hills, Los Angeles home in 2000.

Berman was found dead shortly before investigators were set to speak with her about the 1982 disappearance of Durst's first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.

Durst has long maintained he had nothing to do with Berman's death or his wife's disappearance. He has also pleaded not guilty to Berman’s murder.

Durst has said the last time he saw his first wife was when he dropped her off at a train station in Westchester, New York, so she could head back to medical school in the city in 1982.

What will happen in court?

Durst remains jailed without bail and will appear in a Los Angeles court tomorrow for arraignment.

The murder charge against him includes the special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and killing a witness to a crime. There is also an allegation that he personally used a handgun to carry out Berman’s murder.

At the end of the preliminary proceedings that were continued over several months, Durst's lawyer, David Chesnoff, argued that there was no hard evidence — such as DNA, fingerprints or witnesses — linking him to Berman's killing.

He was interviewed extensively for the documentary which examined the disappearance of his wife, and the killings of Berman and a Texas neighbour, Morris Black, in 2001.

The case inspired the 2010 film, All Good Things, starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. In the DVD commentary, Durst said what was depicted in the film was very close to what happened.
