Just Wait Until You See What Shelby Does With the 2020 GT500
Debuting in Ford's main inside display area atis Shelby American's latest concept vehicle, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake. If the Dragon Snake name sounds familiar to you, it should. The Dragonsnake name was used in the 1960s (all one word back then) when Shelby American offered a drag-racing version of its Shelby Cobra model. Given the new Ford Shelby GT500's dual-clutch transmission and stout 5.2L engine, Shelby American reimagined Ford's new Mustang supercar for that same mission.
Ram 1500 Rebel OTG Concept for SEMA Is an Epic Overland Rig
The perfect truck to take you off-gridThe Ram 1500 Rebel OTG concept is a sort of mashup of Mopar and REI catalogs, paying homage to the special brand of off-roading pioneered in Australia. The OTG—for "off the grid"—is a Rebel-spec truck powered by a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 that drinks from a 33-gallon tank for long-distance travel. A high-end Dometic refrigerator/freezer in the bed is powered by rooftop solar panels via a separate 12-volt battery, and there's also a Dometic gas stove and sink in the OTG's bed that can be pulled out past the 60/40-split tailgate.
Later in the SEMA week, Shelby American plans to introduce a second concept vehicle at its annual SEMA VIP party at the Shelby Heritage Center. This second concept, based on Ford's best-selling F-150 pickup truck, is called the Shelby Super Snake Sport F-150 concept and was built in response to enthusiast requests for a scorching-fast street truck.
"Our research and development team continually pushes the 'bleeding edge' of performance," said Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American. "These two concepts are an exploration of new capabilities, new technologies and potential new models. We optimized each vehicle for a specific task by leveraging new, innovative ideas. Now we're seeking feedback from enthusiasts about the pair, including their thoughts on potential production."
First Look! SEMA 2019 Move-In Gallery Inside the Las Vegas Convention Center
This is your first look at SEMA 2019 inside the Las Vegas Convention Center before the show begins. Each year, right around Halloween, the world of automotive everything converges Las Vegas, Nevada, for the biggest aftermarket car show south of the North Pole. This is the place to be if you want to see the latest trends and newest parts. Oh, and who could forget that some of the most renowned hot rod and custom car builders tend to show up and unveil their hottest new builds every year at the show.
The Shelby team's design for the Dragon Snake adds more power to the car (800+ hp is the number being tossed around), revises the suspension for maximum grip and straight-line acceleration for drag-racing prowess, lightens the car, retunes the DCT transmission, and modifies the bodywork, including unique wheels. A widebody option, popular with past and present Super Snake Mustang builds, is also being considered. In addition to the engine tune, Shelby American added high-flow catalytic converters, new lightweight glasswork, and other innovations to ensure it ends up in the winner's circle of any drag race it enters.
The Super Snake Sport F-150 is based on the two-door truck model and harkens back to the muscle-car era of the 1960s with plenty of power to take on all comers. The two vehicles were designed, engineered and built at Shelby American in Las Vegas. The Dragon Snake will be on display throughout SEMA week in the Ford display in the Central Hall, while the Super Snake Sport F-150 can be seen at the Shelby American Heritage Center at 6405 Ensworth Street in Las Vegas.
"While our current four-door Shelby trucks are extremely popular, hardcore fans dreamed of a two-door in the spirit of the great 1960s muscle cars," Patterson said. "After an event where we were besieged with those requests, Vince LaViolette and I began penciling out a Shelby Super Snake Sport over dinner. We took that idea to trusted partners, suppliers, enthusiasts, and team members to collaborate on the design and content. The Shelby Super Snake Sport F-150 is that vision come to life as a concept vehicle."
