2019 Volkswagen Arteon: Business Casual Done Right

2019 Volkswagen Arteon: Business Casual Done Right At some point in the next decade, producing diesels will stop making sense for Volkswagen. Right now, though, the Arteon TDI is the best long-range sedan for the money. The current Volkswagen CC, the long-wheelbase Passat with the "stylized sweeping roofline," is not the last word in car design. At some point, even Volkswagen had to realize how boring it was. Otherwise, they couldn't have come up with a successor launched in Turmeric Yellow. Also known as Curcuma, or gold, if you prefer not to beat around the bush. But call it what you will, the car under the paint is a more upscale proposition than the CC, with a price tag still kept in the $35,000 range.

Volkswagen is gearing up for the flagship Arteon's U.S.-market release. The replacement for the swoopily styled CC saloon, the sharper Arteon is positioned to go a touch more upmarket, even if isn't reaching towards the sumptuous heights where the Phaeton once resided. The Arteon was unveiled for Europe a year ago in Geneva, and the time has now come for the saloon to make it westwards as a 2019 model.

The only engines available for the Arteon anywhere are four-cylinder affairs, and the most powerful iteration of the 2.0 TSI is the sole option for American Arteons, offering 268 horsepower in American spec. An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Arteon, but it can be ordered with 4Motion all-wheel-drive if required.

Volkswagen teases new generation Jetta

Volkswagen teases new generation Jetta Teaser GIF at Volkswagen Canada consumer site shows various highlightsWe don’t know that we trust one or the other to be a better indication of the upcoming car, since they look a bit different (and even though you can’t see either one clearly enough, you can see similarities). The first image at vw.ca clicks through to a GIF, in which various parts of the all-new sedan are highlighted briefly. Choosing a proper screen shot and lightening it reveals a profile not unlike that of the current sedan, with a window line that is similar and larger headlights that almost appear a throwback to a previous generation.

The specification levels will be SE, SEL and SEL Premium, and the top-of-the-line versions will feature such options as the Digital Cockpit cluster, panoramic sunroof, a massage function on the driver seat and Dynaudio premium audio. Full LED headlights and adaptive damping are standard.

VW's NA CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken says "This car is the spiritual successor to the CC, but it is bolder and faster. Arteon has the style and performance of a luxury Gran Turismo for about the price of a fully loaded midsize sedan." No pricing information is available at the time of writing, but the price for a base car has been estimated at $37,000.

Earlier reports have hinted of a range-topping, turbocharged VR6 Arteon with more than 400 horsepower, but were it to make production, it will likely remain out of reach for U.S. customers.
