Hyundai Teases 45 Electric Concept for Frankfurt

Hyundai Teases 45 Electric Concept for Frankfurt Hyundai has published a teaser image of a battery electric concept car the company will reveal at next month's Frankfurt auto show. The car is called the Hyundai 45, and its design was apparently inspired by "the brand's first model in the 1970s." We presume that was the 1975 Pony, predecessor to the 1980s version of the compact hatchback that established the Korean company in North America. A car that wound up being the target of ridicule (in North America, at least) seems a strange place from which to draw inspiration, but here we are.

When an automaker wants to tease a new vehicle, it'll usually wrap the car in camouflage, which obscures its most interesting details, leaving everyone (ideally) champing at the bit for more. For the Frankfurt Motor Show and the release of the third-generation BMW X6 , the German automaker took a slightly different approach.

BMW this week unveiled a third-generation X6 covered in Vantablack. Consider this the last major teaser before the chopped-roof utility vehicle makes its debut at Frankfurt in two weeks' time. While nearly every corner of the car is obscured, it's pretty easy to make out the roofline and the grille, the latter of which is illuminated because that's the world we live in now.

BMW X6 Vantablack Arrives In World's Darkest Black Color

BMW X6 Vantablack Arrives In World's Darkest Black Color There's something about this that's so black, it's like how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black. There are new photos of the 2020 BMW X6 ahead of the crossover's public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but you might struggle to see the vehicle because it's wearing a Vantablack VBx2 coating. The substance absorbs more than 99 percent of visible light making this covering the blackest color in the world. BMW partnered with Vantablack maker Surrey Nano Systems and creative agency Levitation 29 to create the world's blackest X6.

If you're not familiar with Vantablack, it's the creation of Surrey NanoSystems. This vehicle was covered in the Vantablack VBx2 spray-on coating, which is used for architectural and scientific applications. It reflects just 1% of the light sent its way, removing an item's three-dimensional appearance and making you feel like you're staring into a black hole. It achieves this reflectivity by using carbon nanotubes in vertical alignment, which absorbs nearly all light, converting it to heat. And it works: I can't see a damn thing in that top photo, save for some tiny angles along the bottom of the bumper.

It's reasonable to expect that most of the new X5's improvements will be present in its sibling, even though BMW hasn't confirmed any specs just yet. It'll likely be available with I6 and V8 gas powertrains, and a plug-in hybrid could sneak its way in there, too. Like previous generations, it wouldn't be obscene to expect a hi-po X6 M variant in the future, but that one is likely a year away at the earliest.

New Mercedes GLE Coupe Extensively Detailed In Four Videos

New Mercedes GLE Coupe Extensively Detailed In Four Videos Longer and wider than its predecessor, the new coupe-SUV gets a more athletic look. Just five months after Porsche introduced the Cayenne Coupe and less than two months after BMW unveiled the new X6, Mercedes is launching its own large coupe-SUV thingy. Now in its second generation, the GLE Coupe adopts a considerably sleeker shape and sportier design combined with a larger footprint. Indeed, it’s 39 millimeters (1.5 inches) longer and 7 mm (0.3 in) wider than the model it replaces, and that should give it a more imposing stance in real life.

It's a real shame I used Spinal Tap's "none more black" joke a few weeks ago, but then again, who could have predicted this?

We won't have to wait very long for the X6, even though it won't be made available for purchase in Vantablack. There will undoubtedly be some traditionally painted models at the auto show. After its debut in Frankfurt, BMW intends to shove the SUV into showrooms in November, seeing as how its X5 sibling has been on sale for some time now. Like its predecessors, the third-generation X6 will be built at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
