Porsche is updating its 911 GT 3 R race car for the 2019 season with improved aerodynamics, uprated brakes, and further optimized safety kit. Powering the new 911 GT 3 R is a cutting-edge four-litre flat-six unit which is largely identical to the high-performance production engine of the road-legal 911 GT 3

Now with air conditioning.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when Porsche was spotted at the Monza circuit in Italy pushing to the limits a prototype of the 911 GT3 R and now the track-only beast is receiving its official premiere. Ready for the 2019 season, the thoroughbred race car is based on the road-legal 991 GT3 RS (991.2) and uses a largely identical 4.0-liter flat-six engine linked to a sequential six-speed gearbox. Without restrictors, the naturally aspirated mill can churn more than 542 horsepower (404 kilowatts) and offers a wider usable rev range compared to its predecessor.

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring: it’s All About the Wing

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring: it’s All About the Wing My colleague Gabriel Gélinas recently had the opportunity to attend the launch of the wildest 911 GT3 of all, the 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS , at the world-famous Nurburgring race track—arguably the dream of any sports car enthusiast. Me? I got to drive the “tamest” version of the GT3 in and around Munich. The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring is still a beast of a car, but it lacks a few teeth and some bite, making it less intimidating.

Compared to the 911 GT3 R before it, the 2019-spec model has gone through some changes to boost aero in the same vein as the tweaks Porsche applied for the road car. Further modifications included increasing the tire circumference at the front wheels from 650 to 680 millimeters and installing the latest development of the company’s double wishbone suspension.

The engineers also spent some time working on the braking system to increase stiffness and also to enable a more accurate control of the anti-lock brakes. There are six-piston monobloc brake calipers made from aluminum at the front axle where these are paired to ventilated and grooved 390-mm discs. At the back of the race car, Porsche has installed four-piston calipers hooked up with 370-mm discs.

These new spy shots catch the model looking largely finished ahead of a debut that could be very soon.

The new Porsche 911 GT 3 RS is fitted with two-fold mixed tyres as standard; the rear tyres are not only wider but also larger in diameter than the front tyres. The result is a tyre that offers consistently good grip, even during intensive use on the race track , and excellent durability for a sports tyre.

Another order of business was to improve safety by engineering a new bucket seat bolted at six points to grant superior protection for the driver in case of an accident. Corroborated with the adjustable pedal box, Porsche says the driver’s center of gravity has been improved to increase safety. Furthermore, the driver’s door contains a carbon fiber Kevlar aluminum component with energy-absorbing plastic foam to serve as a side impact element in the event of a collision. Both doors as well as the side windows can be removed.

To make it easier to fill up the 120-liter fuel tank and lower the amount of time spent at a pit stop, the 2019 911 GT3 R can now be refilled from the left or right, depending on the track’s configuration. To keep the weight low as much as possible, all windows are made from polycarbonate while a carbon fiber composite material was used for the front hood, roof, doors, wheel arches, rear lid, and the interior trim.

Speaking of the cabin, it has been reworked and “all controls have been perfectly aligned to suit the needs of the driver.” Making its debut in the 911 GT3 R is a much-needed air conditioning system linked directly to the driver’s helmet and seat.

Porsche is already taking orders for the 2019-spec model and is asking €459,000 (plus country-specific value added tax) and will commence deliveries in December.
